Equal Housing

Become a Habitat Homeowner

To be eligible, potential Homeowners must meet three criteria:

Need

May be considered for a Habitat home if your current housing is not adequate and you are unable to obtain suitable housing through other conventional means. Inadequate housing can include problems with the structure, water, heating, electricity or sewage system.

Ability to Pay

The selected applicant will purchase the home from Habitat for Humanity and must demonstrate the ability to meet the monthly mortgage payment. Property taxes and insurance are included in this payment. We will help you determine if you will be able to meet this expense as well as your additional living expenses. Habitat volunteers will help you develop a budget.

Willingness to Partner

Once selected, you become a Habitat for Humanity partner family. You will need to complete 200 hours of Sweat Equity before becoming a homeowner. Some of these hours will be spent building your home and other Habitat homes, which may include cleaning the grounds, painting, helping with construction, providing food to volunteer workers, or working in the office of Habitat for Humanity of Allegany County. Homeownership and finance classes, as well as fundraising or public speaking on behalf of Habitat, will also count toward your Sweat Equity hours.
